MALCOLM Turnbull has plunged deep into “Australiana” culture while pondering what gift to offer Donald Trump this week.

The Prime Minister will be accompanied by his wife Lucy on the trip to New York for his first face-to-face meeting with the US President tomorrow.During an interview on Sunrise this morning, the PM was prodded on whether he may take Mr Trump a tea towel or some other present.

“A mulga wood ashtray, perhaps? You see, they’re out of date these days, no one smokes any more,” Mr Turnbull said in a tongue-in-cheek response.

“I’m sure we’ll exchange courtesies ... we don’t need to be bringing big gifts but we’ll be bringing something to commemorate.”

Barack Obama received an MP3 player loaded with the “best” Australian music, including Kylie Minogue, as a gift from Julia Gillard during her first official White House visit as PM. He was also presented with a souvenir Aussie rules football.

In return Mr Obama gave Ms Gillard an oval-shaped platter with a gold face, with an edge that is a copy of the Oval Office carpet, featuring a selection of famous US political quotes.

Mr Turnbull downplayed the pair’s acrimonious first telephone call in January.

“The reports were pretty exaggerated; it was a very frank, courteous and forthright call and I’m sure we’ll get on very well,” he said.

North Korea will be at the top of the agenda when the pair meet.

Mr Turnbull is also expected to discuss the rogue North Korean regime led by Kim Jong-un and other Asia-Pacific security issues during a Manhattan meeting with Admiral Harry Harris, the commander of US Pacific Command.

Details of Lucy Turnbull’s program are being kept under wraps.

“Lucy is accompanying the PM, however we won’t be detailing the spouses’ program,” a spokeswoman for the PM told News Corp Australia.

It will be a whirlwind trip this week for the Prime Minister, who will likely spend less than 48 hours in New York before heading back to Canberra for next week’s Budget.

Mr Turnbull and Mr Trump will end Thursday night on the decommissioned USS Intrepid aircraft carrier at an American Australian Association event to commemorate the 75th anniversary of the US-Australian Battle of the Coral Sea victory over Japan.

Trump’s Australian adviser and head of Dow Chemical, Andrew Liveris, said he expects emotions will be high during the visit.

“This White House is a relationship driven White House and I think whenever Malcolm was going to get here it was going to be important and I can’t think of anything more important and emotional than celebrating the veterans’ 75th anniversary,” Mr Liveris told AAP.

“I don’t have any details on the meetings, other than they will both be at the event, but I’ll be there and I’m looking forward to having the relationship side of that cemented.”

Mr Liveris, appointed by Mr Trump to head the American Manufacturing Council, has become an influential figure in the White House.
